Author visit inspires Ceredigion’s young people

On Monday 11 September 2023, Waterstones Children’s Laureate 2022-2024, Joseph Coelho, visited Lampeter Library as part of his nationwide ‘Library Marathon’ mission to join a library in every local authority in the UK.

Pupils from Year 6 at Ysgol Bro Pedr joined him at the library for an afternoon of storytelling and poetry, with Coelho sharing his passion for books while inspiring many creative ideas from the children themselves.

The aim of Coelho’s visit was to promote libraries and a love of reading, and to encourage people, young and old, to join their local library. Coelho emphasised the vital role libraries play as essential, central hubs within the community.

Joseph Coelho said: “Libraries made me a writer and make communities thrive. I’m immensely grateful to libraries and the services they provide, so I want to use my platform as the Waterstones Children’s Laureate to champion these essential launchpads of learning. I want to hug every library, these miraculous institutions where new horizons line the shelves, where minds go to grow.”

Delyth Huws, Children’s Librarian at Ceredigion Library Service, added: “It was such an honour to welcome Joseph Coelho to Lampeter Library. Sharing stories and reading together bring so many wide-ranging benefits to children and, with the current cost of living crisis, libraries offer a safe and warm space, packed full of fabulous books, that will encourage and inspire children of all ages and positively affect their lives.”

Coelho joined Lampeter Library at the end of his visit.

Service Update

During the Covid pandemic Ceredigion Library Service suspended fines for overdue items and we automatically renewed items on loan that had reached their return date. From the 1st of March 2023 onwards, automatic renewals will come to an end. This means you will have to renew your items yourself by visiting the library website Ceredigion Library, contacting your local branch, or using the Pori app. We recognise it might take a while to get used to the new system so there will be no fines for late returns during March 2023. However, on 1st April 2023 we will be reintroducing fines for overdue items. Please visit the main Ceredigion Library website for information on current fees and charges.

If you no longer wish to receive updates from the Ceredigion Library Service then please email library@ceredigion.gov.uk.

Winter of Wellbeing

Let’s feel better during the Winter of Wellbeing

We’re forging a new path through winter in Wales this year. Rather than wishing the season away as we continue to recover from and deal with the impact of Covid, we want to help children, young people and families feel good as we head towards Spring.

Further information can be found on the Winter of Wellbeing website.

Ancestry Library Edition Remote Access Ending

In March 2020 libraries around the world had to close their doors due to the global pandemic. ProQuest and Ancestry made the unprecedented decision to grant public libraries temporary remote access to Ancestry Library Edition (ALE) for those who could provide a secure method of authentication.

For further information please visit the Ancestry Library Edition Remote Access Ending page on the Welsh Libraries website.
