Register a Birth
Congratulations on the birth of your baby. This is a very special time for you and your family.
Please remember that you must book an appointment to register the birth within 42 days of your child being born.
We’re here to help make the process as easy as possible. Therefore, if your baby was born in Ceredigion, please telephone us on 01970 633580 to arrange a birth registration appointment.
Alternatively, please complete the birth registration appointment enquiry form below.
- If the parents were married or in a civil partnership on the date of the child’s birth, either parent can register the birth
- If the parents were not married or in a civil partnership on the date of the child’s birth, the father or second female parent must attend the appointment with the mother for both parent’s details to be included on the birth entry. If the mother attends the appointment alone, only her details will be recorded on the birth entry
- If there are two female parents who were not married or in a civil partnership, both must attend the appointment and meet the legal requirements under the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act for the second female parent’s details to be included on the birth entry. If the mother attends the appointment alone, only her details will be recorded on the birth entry
When you attend a birth registration appointment, it would be useful if you could bring;
- The ‘Red Book’ or any birth paperwork provided by the hospital or midwife
- Your passport or birth certificate
- Proof of your current address (such as a driving licence)
- Proof of any former name or names (for example a change of name deed)
- Your marriage or civil partnership certificate (if applicable)
Please note that you are not legally required to produce these documents, but they can help ensure that the information recorded on your child’s birth entry is accurate and correct.
During the registration appointment, the registrar will ask you to confirm the following information:
- Date and place of birth of the child
- Full name and surname of the child
- Full name and surname of the parent(s) (including any former names)
- Address and occupation of the parent(s)
- Date and place of birth of the parent(s)
- If the parents are married or civil partners, the date of marriage/civil partnership and the mother’s maiden surname
The registrar will ask you to read and check all the information on the register page before signing. It is essential that all information is correct, as this is a legal document.
If there are any errors found after the registration has been completed, you will be required to apply for a formal correction, which will incur a charge.
If your baby was born within Ceredigion, at the end of the registration appointment, you will be able to purchase birth certificates for a fee of £12.50 per certificate.
A standard (or full) birth certificate will contain the name, date and place of birth of the child along with the parent(s) details.
If your baby was born outside of Ceredigion, following the appointment, the birth declaration will be sent to the district where the birth occurred. That office is responsible for completing the registration and the subsequent issue of certificates and other related documents. Therefore, we will not be able to issue any documents to you.
