Penweddig pupils explore future opportunities at Fferm Llettytwppa

Pupils from Ysgol Penweddig visited Fferm Llettytwppa on Thursday 08 October as part of an open day designed to showcase the wide range of skills, experiences and opportunities available within the agricultural and rural sectors.

Fferm Llettytwppa is a key part of Ceredigion County Council’s long-term vision to develop and establish a centre that supports and promotes learning, skills development and employment opportunities, helping to nurture the next generation of skilled workers and successful businesses within the rural sector in Ceredigion and beyond.

During the visit, pupils took part in a variety of practical activities led by Hyfforddiant Ceredigion Training staff, including woodworking, blacksmithing, livestock judging, and activities related to animal feeds.

The open day gave pupils an opportunity to experience a working rural learning environment first-hand, and gain a better understanding of the diverse opportunities available in agriculture.

The event forms part of a wider programme of engagement activities at Fferm Llettytwppa. All secondary and all-age schools in Ceredigion have been offered the opportunity to attend similar visits, with plans to extend the invitation to schools outside the county in the future.

Councillor Wyn Thomas, Ceredigion Cabinet Member for Schools, Lifelong Learning and Skills, said: "It is extremely encouraging to see such enthusiasm and interest from the young people who visited Fferm Llettytwppa. Agriculture and the rural economy are an integral part of life and prosperity in Ceredigion, and it is vitally important that we provide opportunities for the next generation to develop new skills and learn more about the wide range of careers available within the sector. Fferm Llettytwppa provides a valuable hands-on learning environment, and I look forward to seeing more schools take advantage of these great opportunities over the coming months."

According to Lela Jenkins, a Year 10 pupil at Ysgol Penweddig: “It was a great opportunity to learn about Agriculture outside the classroom. In my opinion, livestock judging was the best activity.”

More opportunities will be organised for other schools to visit over the next few months.
