A 16 year old Ysgol Penglais pupil has become an internet statistic sensation during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Lloyd Warburton created coronaviruscymru.wales after posting information and graphs on his Twitter page analysing Coronavirus statistics on-line. He started posting information on Twitter as a pastime following his interest in Information Technology.
Lloyd and his family were overwhelmed with interest that the website has attracted. Lloyd said, “I’ve always been interested in maps and statistics and thought this would be a good way to pass the time. I started posting them on my twitter page about 10 days before school shut down and it became a daily thing. My followers seemed to really appreciate my work and it’s grown from there. I decided to create a website and launched it on 29 March so that I could put all the data in one place and make it easy to find and interpret. I’m really grateful for all the support I’ve received, all the advice and recommendations and all the coffee!”
Using Public Health Wales information published daily, Lloyd uses the numbers to develop graphs and statistics in a way that was simple to all. It takes around half an hour to create the graphs and publish them on the website. The information is then available all in one place.
Mair Hughes, Penglais School Headteacher said, “We are delighted and amazed by what Lloyd has created. He has combined his skill, scientific interest, creativity and intuition to create a website and twitter account that has clearly been of interest to thousands of people across Wales. This has clearly been a difficult time for all Year 11 students and to have created something as professional and useful as this during this time is a real credit to Lloyd. Many congratulations to Lloyd - we are very proud of him.”
Lloyd was disappointed he couldn’t take his GCSEs but has a passion for the sciences and is looking forward to returning to do his A Levels in Biology, Geography and sociology.
Originally receiving coffee donations for his work, Lloyd has since received donations, supported charities and bought books ready for his future studies.
