At the UK Coaching Awards 2018 on Thursday 29 November, Ceredigion Basketball coach, Lee Coulson was awarded the UK Community Coach of the Year 2018.

The awards honour great coaching, from people and organisations who demonstrate the role coaching plays in transforming lives and inspiring an active nation.

Lee was also awarded the British Empire Medal in the 2018 New Year’s Honours list for his outstanding contribution to disability sport. As head coach of Aberystwyth Basketball Club, he has helped establish it as one the most inclusive sports club in Wales. Last year, the club achieved insport Gold Club Accreditation for their commitment to inclusivity, becoming the third club in Wales to achieve this high standard.

Councillor Catrin Miles, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Learning Services said, “On behalf of Ceredigion County Council, I wish to congratulate Lee for achieving this fully deserving accolade. His dedication in delivering inclusive sporting activities helps towards making sure that Ceredigion has an opportunity for everyone to keep fit and active.”

Lee delivers weekly sport and activity opportunities for Ceredigion Actif, including IZB, multi-sport, wheelchair basketball and an inclusive leadership programme, ensuring every pupil is included and enjoy taking part in physical activity.

Gemma Cutter, Development Officer for Disability Sports Wales and Ceredigion Actif said, “We’re very proud of Lee’s achievements, he delivers fantastic inclusive sessions and ensures every person has a positive and meaningful experience of sport and physical activity.”

Lee is also the Wales Wheelchair Basketball Association national U15s coach and a Disability Sport Wales performance pathway coach. He has used his influence, expertise, proactive approach and pioneering instincts to introduce new initiatives such as walking basketball to the county. This newest form of the game is aimed at the over 50s who may have injuries preventing them from playing the running game; the sport is now thriving in the county, with a third club being formed this year.
