The Active Young People Team at Ceredigion Actif have started broadcasting bilingual daily activity sessions for Ceredigion’s children young people.

The sessions are an immediate response to the school closures after the Christmas break. The sessions are broadcasted live at 9.30am every Monday to Friday and will continue until February half term.

Each session can be viewed live through YouTube or Facebook and are also saved to Microsoft Teams on Hwb so that they can be accessed or repeated at a later date.

Every day, the Active Young People staff follow the ‘Ffit yn 5’ programme that Ceredigion Schools are already familiar with whereby five different activities are chosen each day. Each activity is shown by the instructor and the children can work together at the same time to complete the session.

The ‘Ffit yn 5’ programme aims to improve young people’s physical health and mental wellbeing, and with children being home schooled at the moment, this can be included as part of their daily routine or as part of their PE lessons. Being active has a positive effect on concentration, achievement and behaviour. During the first week they were broadcasted, 2,846 views were reached on the videos.

Carwyn Young, Ceredigion County Council’s Corporate Manger for Wellbeing Centres, said: “Being active is a great way to start the day, we’d like as many of the young people of Ceredigion as possible to join us so we can be active together. We recognise the challenges that home schooling can bring, so hopefully these 15min sessions will help make a positive contribution to our young people’s physical health, fitness and mental wellbeing, whilst most importantly having fun.”

Councillor Catherine Hughes, Ceredigion County Council Cabinet Member for Porth Ceredigion, Early Intervention, Wellbeing Hubs and Culture, said: “These daily live sessions are a great way to encourage and inspire young people to stay active and healthy. Having the chance to take part in exercises from home, led by experienced instructors and in the company of their peers, is a fantastic opportunity for young people during this time. You can take part when the videos are live, or watch back, and the activities are lively, exciting and fun.”
