Mid Wales to receive almost £13.1 million to deliver regional transport priorities
Mid Wales is set to receive almost £13.1 million in Regional Transport Funding for 2027/28, enabling the continued delivery of key projects and priorities identified within the Mid Wales Regional Transport Plan.
The funding represents a significant vote of confidence in the region's collaborative approach to transport planning and delivery and will support a wide range of improvements across Ceredigion and Powys. Importantly, this latest allocation follows a similarly substantial level of funding secured by the region in 2026/27, marking a significant increase in investment compared with previous years and reflecting the growing momentum behind transport improvements in Mid Wales.
The funding will be used to deliver and develop projects across a number of priority areas, including:
- Road safety schemes to improve safety for all road users and reduce the risk of serious collisions.
- Highway infrastructure improvements to enhance network resilience, reliability and accessibility.
- Public transport initiatives that improve connectivity and access to key services, employment and education.
- Active travel schemes that encourage more people to walk, wheel and cycle for everyday journeys.
- Expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure to support the transition to cleaner, lower-emission transport.
Councillor Shelley Childs, Ceredigion Cabinet Member for Highways and Environmental Services, said: This continued higher level of support from Welsh Government shows that the Mid Wales region of Powys and Ceredigion is now receiving a fairer allocation of national transport funding. This enables us to set out a clear vision to progress and deliver our exciting array of projects and I commend the officers, design teams & contractors who continue to show that Mid Wales really can deliver on our regional transport plan projects and aspirations".
Councillor Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for Greener Powys, said: “This funding is about getting practical improvements delivered for residents across Powys and Ceredigion. It gives us the opportunity to turn our regional transport plan into action — improving everyday journeys, strengthening rural connections and making it easier for people to access work, education, healthcare and essential services. Our focus will now be to deliver and make sure this investment makes a real difference to communities across Mid Wales.”
The investment will help ensure that transport networks across Mid Wales continue to meet the needs of residents, businesses and visitors while supporting wider economic, environmental and social objectives.
The Mid Wales Regional Transport Programme is delivered in partnership across the region and is focused on creating a transport network that supports sustainable economic growth, tackles transport inequalities and contributes to national decarbonisation ambitions.
