Local veg takes the lead on Ceredigion School menus

Ceredigion is part of the Welsh Veg in Schools project. Since January 2025 all schools in Ceredigion have been taking part in the project, serving organic vegetables grown in Wales as part of their school lunches.

In 2025, Ceredigion schools have served 2537kg of vegetables from Castell Howell, the largest in Wales. According to Castell Howell figures, the volume of Welsh vegetable sales from Castell Howell for Ceredigion schools is as follows:

Ysgol y Dderi has launched a podcast for the project where pupils talk about how and why they joined this project while talking to representatives from the Welsh Veg in Schools project and Castell Howell. You can listen to the full podcast here: Welsh Veg Voices. The Future Generations Commissioner referred to this podcast and the project in their December 2025 newsletter.

Heini Thomas, Headteacher of Ysgol y Dderi, said: “The school children have been campaigning enthusiastically for more local vegetables to be served on our school lunch menu, and it’s a great source of pride that Ceredigion has served the highest amount in Wales this year! There was huge excitement when we received carrots from Bwlchwernen farm and broccoli from Lechryd. Knowing that the vegetables were grown locally has had a positive impact on the children’s eating habits, and there was almost no waste! The children understand that the local economy, personal health, and the environment all benefit greatly from the simple choice of eating local vegetables.”

Councillor Wyn Thomas, Ceredigion Cabinet Member for Schools, Lifelong Learning and Skills said: “It’s fantastic to see Ceredigion’s schools leading the way in promoting healthy and sustainable food for our children. The Welsh Veg project not only supports local farmers but also teaches our young people about the value of organic produce and its positive impact on the environment. The success of the county’s schools – serving the highest volume of vegetables in Wales – demonstrates a real commitment to the health and wellbeing of our communities.”
