Dredging work commenced at Aberaeron harbour channel

The dredging of the Aberaeron harbour channel has commenced.

Ceredigion County Council, acting in its capacity as both the Harbour Authority, and Coast Protection Authority for the Ceredigion coastline, has commenced dredging of materials, deposited in the entrance to Aberaeron Harbour, which was largely displaced from South Beach during Storms Amy and Bran.

The Council is taking the opportunity to use the dredged material to strengthen the existing coastal defence asset along South Beach in front of Beach Parade which was depleted during those storms. The dredged material will be placed above Mean High Water Spring (MHWS) and within the site extents of the recently completed Aberaeron Coastal Defence Scheme.

During the initial stages of the work, a pile of shingle will be visible at the top of the beach. This is due to the limited tidal window available to the contractor to carry out the dredging and the stockpile will be regraded in due course between the tidal working windows. The sand extracted will be placed first with the shingle over it, as this will encapsulate the sand reducing the opportunity for it to be moved again.

Monitoring of the beach levels, harbour channel and shingle movement will continue upon completion of these works, whilst the beach continues to settle over time.”
