‘Am Ddrama’ – a new theatre group for Welsh learners of all levels
Question – what do you get if you mix a lively bunch of new Welsh speakers, improvisation scenes in a supermarket and GP surgery, Theatr Felinfach and Hwyliaith?
The answer is loads of laughter and an opportunity to use the Welsh language in a lively and natural way!
The first session of a drama group for new speakers 'Am Ddrama!' was held at Theatr Felinfach in May.
People who are learning Welsh came together to enjoy an acting and improvisation session to develop Welsh language skills in a fun and supportive atmosphere.
The session was organised by Theatr Felinfach and Hwyliaith, bringing Welsh learners to the theatre to experience being on stage in a relaxed and friendly environment. One of the participants said that the drama session for Welsh learners was a “great idea” and that she “enjoyed the session realising that I've spoken Welsh without having to think if my vocabulary was correct or not, and there was no pressure'”
Dwynwen Llywelyn, Head of Theatr Felinfach, said: "As a theatre with deep roots in the community, we want there to be opportunities for new speakers to develop confidence and creativity and, above all, have fun playing with the language in an informal environment."
Hannah James-Whittingham, Theatre and Community Creative Officer, added: "The first session was a lot of fun, and it's great to offer a new opportunity to the people of the area."
This is what Ceredigion County Council Cabinet Member, Councillor Catrin M S Davies, said: "I can't think of a better place to start using your new language. The crew at Theatr Felinfach are dedicated to including everyone, to providing positive opportunities and to ensure plenty of fun – the perfect place for new speakers to experiment with the Welsh language and to gain confidence."
The next session will be held on Tuesday 30 June at 2.30pm in Theatr Felinfach. Anyone is welcome to join, whether you are an experienced learner or just starting your journey.
