Lloyds National Road Championships 2025 Time-Trial Preview

It is less than a week to go until the 2025 Lloyds National Road Championships kicks off in Ceredigion with a high intensity time-time through the Welsh town of Aberaeron. Riders will compete in front the Welsh crowd for glory and the national crown in the first of the three-event championship.

The stage

Thursday 26 June will see the 2025 Lloyds National Road Championship get underway as some of the strongest names in the British road scene battle a challenging route through Ceredigion.

Riders will start in Ffos-y-ffin, traverse the rolling roads to Ciliau Aeron, before heading back to Aberaeron and navigating a short, sharp ascent of Rhiw Goch.

Racing begins early doors, with the under-23 men kicking things off at 09:00, before the elite women at 10:45, under-23 women at 13:40, before finishing on the elite men at 14:50.

The riders

The quality of British riders competing at the Lloyds National Road Championships this year is sky high. Cat Ferguson (Movistar Team), competing in the under-23 time-trial, is fresh off the back of an impressive 2025 Lloyds Tour of Britain Women earlier this month, which saw her claim both the points classifications and best young rider jerseys and a career-first stage win in Kelso.

Anna Henderson (Lidl-Trek) returns to the championship after winning the women’s time-trial last year, but will be under stiff competition by the likes of three-time national road race champion Pfeiffer Georgi (Team Picnic PostNL), and last years under-23 women winner Josie Nelson (Team dsm-Firmenich PostNL)

Max Walker (Astana Qazaqstan Development Team) and Ethan Vernon (Israel – Premier Tech) return to the road championships in the Elite Men, aiming to take the title from Josh Tarling (INEOS Grenadiers).

Tomos Pattinson (Team Visma | Lease a Bike Development) returns, looking to defend his under-23 men’s time-trial title from last year, but will have to fight off talent like Ben Wiggins (Hagens Berman Jayco CT), who will be looking to do one better than his silver last year.

A host of Welsh riders will be set to be some of the crowd favourites in the event, including Owain Doull (EF Education – EasyPost), sisters Zoe Backstedt (CANYON-SRAM zondacrypto) and Elynor Backstedt (UAE Team ADQ), Elinor Barker (Uno-X Mobility) and Megan Barker (Tekkerz CC).

Speaking on the upcoming road championships, Zoe Backstedt said: “I can’t wait for Nationals this year as it’s always a privilege to race on home soil, and being in Wales makes it feel even more special. Nationals are always such a great celebration of British talent - I’m proud to be part of it and can’t wait to line up and give it my best shot.”
