Ceredigion commits to a Relational Practice vision for all schools

A new initiative has been launched in Ceredigion to support all schools and education settings to develop and utilise relational practice as part of their day-to-day work.

Relational Practice is based on calm and consistent adult behaviour. It allows adults in school settings or at home, or anyone who influences children’s lives, to develop healthy relationships and create positive outcomes for young people.

In September 2025, Ceredigion’s Schools, Lifelong Learning and Culture Service organised a conference on ‘Relational Practice’ for all school staff across the county and professionals from other appropriate departments.

The event featured a presentation by When The Adults Change, an organisation whose work has inspired a national shift in behaviour practice.

Councillor Wyn Thomas, Ceredigion Cabinet Member for Schools and Lifelong Learning, said: “I would like to thank the team for organising such an inspiring conference explaining the many advantages of Relational Practice. It’s more than a behaviour strategy – it’s a cultural shift. By changing how adults respond, we create environments where children feel safe, respected, and ready to learn."

Ceredigion County Council is committed to create a consistent, county-wide approach that promotes positive behaviour and wellbeing among children and young people, while equipping staff with the skills to manage challenges effectively and compassionately.

The Schools, Lifelong Learning and Culture Service will continue to support schools through training, coaching, and sharing best practices to foster consistency and peer learning.

This initiative underlines Ceredigion County Council’s commitment to nurturing environments where young people can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.
