Partners in Mid Wales have embarked on an innovative collaboration which will support the region in making the essential step change required to meet the UK net zero carbon targets by 2050.
The Welsh Government Energy Service has worked extensively in partnership with each region across Wales. Here in Mid Wales the work has culminated in the Mid Wales Energy Vision & Strategy.
The strategy, developed over 18 months with opinions of hundreds of stakeholders, has been approved by Powys County Council’s cabinet and is due to be considered by Ceredigion County Council on Tuesday (March 16).
In a joint statement, Councillors Rosemarie Harris and Ellen ap Gwynn said:“We all have an important role to play to ensure we have a flexible and reliable energy generation and supply system that delivers low carbon and low-cost energy to our businesses and communities across Mid Wales.
“As Leaders of our Local Authorities and our joint work with Growing Mid Wales, we regularly hear the constraints of our current energy system on our people and businesses. From grid constraints to the need to transform our energy system to reduce carbon emissions whilst increasing local ownership and tackling fuel poverty.
“Delivering this vision will require significant effort across all levels of Government, Industry and communities – but we are well-placed to lead on a number of initiatives in Mid Wales. We will be looking to establish new engagement structures and dedicated capacity to take this work forward in earnest in the coming months.”
The strategy sets a clear blueprint to both growing our economy and responding to the threat of climate change for future generations.
Designed to put Mid Wales firmly on a pathway to achieve net zero carbon by 2050 deliver social and economic benefits alongside the region’s future growth aspirations. It will transform the regional energy system ensuring it is flexible, reliable, and fit for purpose for a decarbonised future.
The strategy has been developed with purposeful consideration to the UK and Welsh Governments policy and strategy environment such as the 10 Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, and A Low Carbon Wales, with the ambitions of the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 at its heart and both Powys & Ceredigion’s policies to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2030 in line with the Welsh Public sector target.
It builds on the strategic ambitions for Energy as set out in the Vision for Growing Mid Wales published in May 2020 and complements with the local plans and policies emerging from the Public Sector Boards and local organisations.
