Ceredigion County Council will be showing their support for International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Bi-phobia (IDAHOT) on Thursday 17 May, by raising the rainbow flag outside Council Offices at Penmorfa, Aberaeron and Canolfan Rheidol, Aberystwyth.

The date had been dedicated to mark the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. It is an annual landmark drawing attention to the stigma, abuse and discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people continue to face. The rainbow flag is a symbol of their struggles for equality, dignity and respect within society.

Ceredigion Youth Service will be raising awareness of IDAHOT by sharing information on their social media channels during the day. During the week, there will be discussions and posters created on the subject organised within the youth clubs across the county. You can keep up to date with Ceredigion Youth Service by following their Facebook and Twitter pages, @GICeredigionYS.

Leader of Ceredigion County Council, and Champion for Equalities and Diversity, Councillor Ellen ap Gwynn said, “Ceredigion County Council are proud to be showing their support to IDAHOT. As a Council, we treat everyone equally and are committed to providing equality and valuing diversity in all its roles as community leader, service provider and employer. Equality lies at the heart of everything we do. Equality means understanding and tackling barriers so that everyone has a fair chance to fulfil their potential. We are committed to treating all Ceredigion citizens with respect, and providing services which are responsive to people’s diverse needs.”
