The final annual review of the Council’s Carbon Management Plan has revealed that Council carbon emissions have reduced by 21.15% in the last 5 years.
A target from Ceredigion County Council’s Carbon Management Plan to cut Council carbon emissions by 15% was exceeded in 2017. An additional target of 18% has since also been comfortably exceeded. The reduction was announced in a meeting of the Council’s Cabinet on 29 May 2018.
The Council’s Sustainability Champion, Councillor Alun Williams said, “The Council has invested £2.1m in renewable energy and energy-saving initiatives over five years which this year has resulted in a saving of over £1.9m. This means in the last year alone, the Council has almost recouped the total cost of the five-year investment. The cumulative total savings for the period 2012/13 to 2016/17 has been calculated at approximately £4.2m against a business as usual scenario.
Considering this, and saving 750 tons of carbon, it’s clear that the positive action we’ve taken is not only providing important environmental benefits, but also significant financial savings, which can then be used to help maintain services.”
Work will now begin to produce a new Carbon Management Plan to make further carbon reductions and financial savings. The changes made under the Carbon Management Plan supports the Council’s corporate priority of promoting environmental and community resilience.
