The statutory fee for certificates issued when registering the death of children will now be waived in Ceredigion on grounds of compassion. The waiving of fees follows a decision taken by Ceredigion County Council’s Cabinet on 23 January 2018.

It was decided that the fee would be waived to those registering a still-birth, the death of a child up to 18 years old and the simultaneous registration of the birth and death of a baby (a situation which arises when a baby is born alive but dies prior to the birth being registered).

The Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member responsible for Corporate Services, Councillor Ray Quant MBE said, “Having to register the death of a child will always be a harrowing experience, and having to pay even a nominal sum is an unnecessary additional burden. It’s absolutely right that the Council waive the fee.”

The decision follows another Cabinet decision made in September 2017 to fully support a Welsh Local Government Association proposal to remove the charging of fees for child burials and cremations.
