With Ceredigion set to be busy during the summer months, Safe Zones will be in place to ensure the streets are safe for everyone.

Safe Zones were originally implemented in July 2020 and have since returned for 2021 in readiness for the Easter and the Summer periods. The Easter period allowed changes to be trialled and further changes have been made to improve the zones following feedback.

Coronavirus infection rates are currently low in Ceredigion. However, with more people expected to holiday in Wales and Ceredigion during the summer, we need to have measures in place that help people visit shops and services in our towns safely and keep rates low. The Safe Zones also allow businesses to continue trading outdoors.

The measures involved with the Safe Zones include widening of footpaths, dropping curbs, closure of roads, adaption to parking bays and areas for businesses to trade to allow people to maintain a 2 metre social distance at all times. The next few weeks will see the red and white baulks replaced in readiness for pavements to be build out. This will start with new pins to replace the baulks followed by new paving and kerbstones.

Road closures for the summer are as follows:

  • Aberaeron: Arrangements will stay as they are including minor changes to Pwll Cam and Regent Street. Operatives will be stationed at the barrier to Quay Parade on a daily basis.
  • Aberystwyth: Roads will close between 11am and 5pm during Half Term school holiday week, 28 May to 07 June, and then 02 July through to the end of September. The roads will close Monday to Saturday. There will be no road closures on Sundays.
  • Borth: Arrangements will stay as they are.
  • Cardigan: Roads will close between 12pm and 4pm during Half Term school holiday week, 28 May to 07 June and then 02 July through to the end of September. The roads will close Monday to Saturday. There will be no road closures on Sundays.
  • New Quay: Due to the nature of the town being a holiday destination, roads will close daily between 12pm and 5pm on 28 May right through to the end of September.
