Ceredigion Youth Service recently presented a handcrafted bench to the community of Tregaron, as part of a youth-led community project. The group of young people aged 16-25 are part of ‘Inspire’, the Youth Service’s Outreach programme.

The group consists of young people from across Ceredigion, who volunteer at least one day a week. They have the opportunity to develop themselves through organised activities, skill-building workshops, volunteering events and taster experiences.

Gwen Evans is an Outreach Youth Worker for Ceredigion Youth Service. She said, “We created the ‘Inspire’ programme to give young people a sense of identity and ownership. We meet every week in different areas of Ceredigion. We provide support with transport, and enjoy coming together to socialise and try different courses and activities. These activities develops confidence and self-esteem.”

This project came from a £500 youth-led grant from CAVO; Ceredigion Association of Voluntary Organisations. The young people decided to use this towards receiving woodwork taster courses from Hyfforddiant Ceredigion Training, which enabled them to design, plan and construct the bench. They then decided to donate the bench to Tregaron Community Town Council, for them to put it where the community can enjoy it.

Elen James is the Corporate Lead Officer for Culture and Lifelong Learning. She said, “It’s a pleasure to see these young people strive and develop themselves into positive members of the community. The commitment and effort they show each week to think of others and to give back to their community is admirable. I also want to congratulate the Youth Service in providing these opportunities for young people to flourish and to develop. This support is crucial in giving our young people avenues to express themselves and feel part of their community.”

To celebrate their achievements, an unveiling was held at Hamdden Caron Leisure. The bench was donated to Tregaron Community Town Council, with support from Ceredigion County Council officers and Councillors.
