On the day of Wales' first World Cup match, activities were launched and a number of exciting projects that have been underway in Ceredigion were revealed.
Ysgol Henry Richard Year 5, 6 and 9 pupils came together to have a film Premiere, poem unveiling, activities and a music video on Monday 21 November.
It all started with all Ceredigion Primary Schools taking part in a workshop to create a poem with the poet Ceri Wyn Jones. The schools set about creating and then Ceri Wyn organized the work that was received, turning the poem into a rap. The rap follows the ball's journey from one school to another with the schools passing, kicking, heading the ball across 39 primary schools. Year 6 pupils from the county's schools contributed and performed in a film. The rap to accompany the poem was developed by the group Roughion.
All the High Schools in the county have been involved in creating a poem with the poet Aneirin Karadog. That poem has now been turned into a picture by the artist Lizzie Spikes.
A website full of resources and activities has been released to the county's schools. It includes challenges by Dafydd Iwan, a chat with Rhys Norrington Davies and a commentary session with Dylan Ebenezer. The resources are full of language, mathematics and numeracy activities, and expressive arts.
The cherry on the cake was a video of the county's schools singing Yma o Hyd. The video was sent to the Welsh Football Association to share 'good luck' from Ceredigion. The video can be seen on Cardi Iaith's YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/z24qpA5umcI
Councillor Ifan Davies, Chairman of the Council, said: “The children of Ceredigion have been working hard to create these masterpieces to support our country in the World Cup. They look like they enjoyed the activities whilst also learning through the Welsh language. Good luck to Wales from everyone in Ceredigion!”
Anwen Eleri, Welsh Language Support Officer, said: “When going around Ceredigion's schools, it is so nice to see the buzz of excitement among our young people, and also the teachers. All this work certainly makes the Welsh language exciting and relevant for our children. Thank you to the schools for being part of this unforgettable time in Welsh history.”
There is great excitement in the county's schools. They are ready to support Wales! If effort could be turned into goals, Wales will surely beat the World Cup!
