Over recent months, Cered: Menter Iaith Ceredigion and Radio Aber have been working in partnership to create an innovative weekly radio show focusing on all things Welsh.
The programme which airs every Thursday at 12pm is innovative in that it is conducted through the medium of English under the title Cymru United.
The key message of the show is that the Welsh Language belongs to everyone from fluent Welsh speakers and those who are learning Welsh to those who may only recognise a few words of the language. The show’s presenter, Rhodri Francis said: “We often forget about the huge contribution made by those who don’t speak Welsh – for example all those non Welsh speaking parents who choose a Welsh medium education for their children.”
Combining music and chat, Rhodri has been fortunate to have had the company of a wide variety of guests choosing their favourite Welsh songs and discussing their life, work and their relationship with the Welsh Language.
Cered Team Leader, Steff Rees added: “Ceredigion remains one of those counties where the Welsh language is spoken naturally on a daily basis however it must be remembered that over 50% of the population do not speak Welsh and the figure who see themselves as Welsh is amongst the lowest in Wales at 52%. As such, a radio show such as Cymru United is the kind of innovation we need in order to promote the Welsh Language and its culture to everyone and not just those that can already speak Welsh.”
