A series of litter picking events will be held across Ceredigion in February 2018. The events will be open to the public and will be facilitated by Ceredigion County Council officers who will provide litter picking equipment as well as drinks and snacks.

Ceredigion is fortunate to have a number of local groups and schools who regularly carry out litter picks in their neighbourhoods and on the local beaches. Groups organised by national groups such as Keep Wales Tidy, Surfers Against Sewage, and The Marine Conservation Society also make big contributions to maintaining Ceredigion’s coastline. The combination of high tides, winter storms and the 8 million pieces of plastic entering the seas every day inevitably leads to accumulations of litter stranded high on Ceredigion’s beaches.

The first litter picking event was held at Geufron Woodland in Penparcau on 8 February. Volunteers enjoyed two hours of picking up discarded plastic and other waste – making a real impact in the local area.

The events will be held in;
• Borth Beach, on 14 February between 10am and 12pm. The meeting point is in the parking area opposite the golf club.
• Ynyslas Beach, on 22 February between 2pm and 4pm. The meeting point is in the Golf Club car park in Ynyslas
• Parc y Llyn, Llanbadarn on 27 February between 10am and 12pm. The meeting point is in Morrison’s Car Park adjacent to the cycle path.

Rachel Mills, Ceredigion County Council’s Environmental Protection Officer said, “2018 is the VisitWales ‘Year of The Sea’, a celebration of Wales’ 870-mile coastal path, 230 beaches and 50 islands, so what better time to join an ever growing band of volunteers in stemming the tide of litter? By working together, we can make a real change to the amount of plastic on our beaches in Ceredigion.”

Attendees are encouraged to wear suitable clothing. To take part in in an organised event, or if you would like to organise an event yourself and wish to borrow litter picking equipment, contact Rachel.Mills@ceredigion.gov.uk or call Rachel Mills on 07871 275241.
