Results from the 2018 National School Sport Survey found that the amount of physical activity children in Ceredigion take part in has increased since 2015.

Sport Wales surveyed over 120,000 pupils across Wales. Results show that 52% of Ceredigion’s Key Stage 2, 3 and 4 pupils take part in sports three or more times per week. This is up from 49% in 2015 and also more than the current National figure of 48%. Ceredigion boys were more active than girls and children are more active while at Primary School than at Secondary School.

Councillor Catrin Miles, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Learning Services said, “It is pleasing to hear that there’s been an increase in sport participation with Ceredigion pupils. These figures reflect the increasing number of programmes that Ceredigion County Council are running through Ceredigion Actif. All programmes are aimed at increasing opportunities to improve physical skills, confidence and motivation. I hope that this rise in participation will continue in 2019.”

In addition, results showed that nearly two thirds (63%) of pupils in Ceredigion are members of sports clubs and over a third (36%) of pupils volunteer at school or at a Community Club. These figures reflects the work that the Young Ambassador Leadership Programme in Ceredigion where every school has Young Leaders delivering extra-curricular activities.

Alwyn Davies, Active Young People Manager said, “This is testament to the quality of the collaborative work going on in schools, pre-schools and Family Centres in Ceredigion as we strive to improve opportunities to all young people across the County.

The picture is bright. The data is heading in the right direction, but we need to continue to challenge young people who are not currently participating in physical activity more than 3 times a week active. We need to diversify the offer which will allow children who don’t like sport, or who don’t think it is for them, to find something which they would love to be involved with.

We are currently looking to work with key individual partners. These include sporting partners as well as health, play and education.”

Though the School Sports Survey figures indicate successful engagement. It also highlights the areas where Ceredigion Actif and its partners need to continue to influence and support a change. There are certain barriers that continue to limit the amount of activities that young people attend, such as time, cost and ease of getting to the location. For more young people to be able to participate in sport more frequently, it is important that opportunities are available and easy to access.
