Armed Forces Week is held between 21 and 26 June this year.

Ceredigion County Council is showing their support by raising the Armed Forces Flag outside the main council offices in Aberystwyth and Aberaeron.

Most of this year’s events and activities are held virtually and will be shared on social media. However, one army veteran is taking on a challenge in order to raise awareness of Woody’s Lodge veterans charity, the charity that Armed Forces Champion and Chairman Councillor Paul Hinge has chosen to support this year.

Army veteran amputee Steve Owen will be walking 85 miles across Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire to raise awareness of Woody’s Lodge veterans charity during the week. Armed Forces Covenant Liaison Officer Hayley Edwards will join Steve to walk the remaining miles on his last day. He will then be welcomed back by Armed Forces Champion Councillor and Chairman, Paul Hinge as he finishes his walk. You can keep up to date with Steve’s walking progress on Woody’s Lodge Facebook page.

Councillor Paul Hinge said: “Steve is a great guy, a son of Ceredigion, and this walk of 85 miles for him personally is no mean feat having lost a leg in Afghanistan. Woody’s Lodge, a charity that seeks to provide a vast array of services to both veterans and their families, servicemen and women and those who work in our blue light services all of whom come into contact with some awful and tragic events. As a veteran myself, I wanted to support Steve’s challenge and help promote the excellent work Woody’s Lodge does all year round.”

Hayley Edwards, Regional Armed Forces Covenant Liaison Officer for Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire said: “When Steve told me of his 85 mile walk over Armed Forces Week to raise awareness for Woody’s Lodge I was totally blow away by his dedication, commitment and courage to undertake such a feat! Woody’s is such a worthy cause and does excellent work for our Armed Forces and Blue Light community. It’s the least I could do to walk with him on one of the days and show my support. I only hope that I can keep up with him!”
