In December 2021, Ceredigion’s School Service, Youth Service, CAVO with Ceredigion’s Connect to Kindness team called on young people to design a mural based on the theme of Kindness which began during National Anti-bullying in November last year.

This idea was developed from the West Wales Regional Partnership Board’s Connect to Kindness campaign which aims to create more understanding about the benefit and impact of kindness to ourselves and other people. In schools, the campaign emphasises how kindness in the classroom encourages positivity which children can take with them throughout their lives.

A panel of judges met in December to go through the host of wonderful creative designs received by individuals and groups. The panel included Poppy Evans, Ceredigion’s UKYP Member of Youth Parliament and Lloyd Warburton, Ceredigion’s MYP, Wales Youth Parliament where they agreed on two winning designs.

The winning design was created by a group of pupils at Ysgol Bro Teifi with Ysgol Llanfarian coming in second place. Ysgol Llanfarian put together a presentation explaining the process of how children and young people of all ages worked together to create the final design.

As a prize for winning the mural design competition, Dean of 'Marvellous Murals' will bring their plans to life on the school site ahead of spring this year. This will enable the children and young people to be reminded of the important message of being kind to themselves and others with a colourful and eye-catching design which they have designed themselves.

All other schools who took part including Llangwyryfon, Rhydypennau, Penweddig, Ysgol Gymraeg, Penrhyncoch, Myfenydd, Padarn Sant and Bro Pedr will receive £200 and a Connect to Kindness badge from the West Wales Care Partnership Regional Board for the pupils to celebrate their creativity and kindness.

Councillor Catrin Miles, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Schools, Lifelong Learning and Skills, Support and Intervention said: “Congratulations to both Ysgol Bro Teifi and Ysgol Llanfarian on their success in the mural design competition. It’s refreshing to see young people and children be given the opportunity create art and be inspired by the kindness message as it’s a very simple but important message that we all need to follow. Well done to all schools who took part.”
