Ceredigion residents are being warned not to lose their voice on decisions that affect them by making sure their electoral registration details are up to date.
With local government elections taking place in Ceredigion on 5 May 2022, this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure they can take part. It is also important to be on the electoral register for your credit rating.
The annual canvass ensures that Ceredigion can keep the electoral register up to date, identifying any residents who are not registered to vote so that they can be encouraged to do so. With 16-17 year olds and all nationalities now able to vote in local elections in Wales, this will be an important opportunity to ensure these new voters can get onto the electoral register before next year’s local government elections.
Residents need to look out for a letter from Ceredigion’s Electoral Services so we can make sure we have the right details on the electoral register for every address in Ceredigion. Make sure you check the details on the letter. If your details have not changed, you do not need to do anything.
If you’re not currently registered, your name will not appear on the letter we have sent to your address. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or you can contact the electoral services via email electoralservices@ceredigion.gov.uk or 01545 572032.
People who have moved recently are particularly encouraged to inform Ceredigion Electoral Services with their correct details. Research by the Electoral Commission, published in 2019, indicates that recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time.
Eifion Evans, Returning Officer for Ceredigion said: “It doesn’t matter where you were born. If you are aged 16 and over you are able to vote in elections in Wales but only if you register to vote first. If you’re not already registered in Ceredigion, make sure you provide the necessary information to us when it is needed and register to vote online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.”
