At 8:30pm on Saturday 24 March, Ceredigion County Council will join hundreds of millions of people across the world that will be turning off their lights for one hour in a show of support for action on climate change.

This year marks the 11th anniversary of WWF’s Earth Hour, an event that continues to grow every year with more people than ever pledging their support to take action on climate change. This year, WWF are asking everyone to pledge to change one thing in their everyday life that will help protect the planet with #PromiseForThePlanet.

Cabinet Member with responsibility for Carbon Management and Sustainability, Councillor Alun Williams, said, “Once again this year, Ceredigion County Council is proud to be able to support the Earth Hour. Our Promise For The Planet will be to reduce the amount of single-use plastics used by the Council and to support community plastic reduction initiatives in Ceredigion. We strongly encourage our local communities and businesses to make a Promise For The Planet, whether that be to recycle more, carry a reusable coffee cup or water bottle, use public transport or car share. Join us in support of the global lights out event for Earth Hour.”

The following locations in Ceredigion will have their lights turned off as part of Earth Hour:

• Aberystwyth Castle
• Constitution Hill, Aberystwyth
• Canolfan Alun R Edwards, Aberystwyth
• Neuadd Cyngor Ceredigion, Penmorfa, Aberaeron
• Canolfan Rheidol, Aberystwyth

Anne Meikle, Head of WWF Cymru, said. “We’re delighted that Ceredigion County Council is supporting WWF’s Earth Hour again this year. The wildlife we love, from puffins to polar bears, are at risk from the effects of climate change, pollution & over-consumption.That’s why this year, as well as switching lights off on 24 March, we’re asking people to take a small step to reduce their impact on the planet. Everyone - individuals, schools and businesses - can make a Promise For The Planet by visiting www.wwf.org.uk/earthhourwales.”
