Do you want to be a Wild World Hero? Join us at Ceredigion Library Service over the summer holidays for the chance to be a real life hero, and to become one by reading!

The 2021 Summer Reading Challenge is starting in all Ceredigion Libraries on Saturday, 10 July. Children between 4 and 11 years old are encouraged to visit their local library over the summer holidays and to read six or more books of their choice.

This year’s theme is Wild World Heroes, and children will have the opportunity to read stories or factual books about nature and protecting the planet, as well as learning about some of the most important environmental concerns of our time. As the children work through the challenge, they will be able to win many fantastic prizes, with each child that finishes the challenge receiving a special Wild World Heroes certificate and medal.

All Ceredigion’s libraries are now open to the public. They are special places for children, and staff are able to give valuable guidance on all sorts of books suitable for children of all ages. Although the main theme of Wild World Heroes is nature and environmental issues such as plastic pollution, recycling, deforestation, habitats in danger and saving the environment, children can of course read anything that takes their fancy as part of the challenge. And there is plenty of choice here at Ceredigion Library Service – and all of it for free!

As well as visiting the library itself, children can also borrow books for free from the Borrowbox and Libby apps – just visit the Ceredigion Library Service website to download the apps. The interactive bilingual Wild World Heroes (www.WildWorldHeroes.org.uk) website also provides fantastic opportunities for children to connect with famous authors and artists, to play games, discuss favourite books and to win digital prizes for reading.  We will also be running two competitions alongside the challenge this year, the first a wildlife photography competition, and the second to create a home-made Bug Hotel in your garden and to send us photos of it.  More information about these activities will follow on our Facebook page and on our website, so keep a lookout!

Councillor Dafydd Edwards, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Environmental Services, Housing and Customer Contact said: “After a challenging year for all, this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic way to keep up children’s literacy levels over the summer holidays, and to give children the chance to catch up with all the best new books available at our libraries here in Ceredigion.”

So why don’t you become a Wild World Hero this year, and join us in the Summer Reading Challenge?
