Welsh Assembly School Uniform Grant - The Grant Scheme

The Welsh Assembly has introduced a scheme offering financial assistance to certain parents on low income towards the purchase of school uniform for their children when they move from primary to secondary school. Ceredigion Local Authority (LA) administers the Scheme on its behalf.

The grant is available for pupils entering Year 7 of a secondary school and for pupils attending special schools, special needs resource bases and pupil referral units who are aged 11 at the start of the school year.

The grant is to provide assistance towards the cost of purchasing articles deemed to be suitable to be worn as school uniform by the relevant school governing body. It shall be the responsibility of the parent to establish which items of uniform are acceptable to the school.

Eligibility for Grant

Pupils entering Year 7 in a maintained school in Ceredigion and with an existing eligibility for free school meals qualify for the grant. Where pupils move to a school maintained by a different authority, the application will need to be made to the maintaining authority for that secondary school.

Accordingly, children of families currently in receipt of one of the following benefits will be eligible:

  • Income Support (IS)
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance (IBJSA)
  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (IR)
  • Child Tax Credit but not Working Tax Credit and have an annual income, as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs that does not exceed £16,190
PLEASE NOTE: If you receive Working Tax Credit you do not qualify
  • Guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
  • Working Tax Credit 'run-on' - the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit

Dates for Receiving Applications

Eligibility for the grant will be judged at the time of application. Families are able to apply anytime between the 1st June and the 31st December each year.

Amount of Grant

The Grant for each eligible pupil has been set at £105.00.

Form of Payment

Payment will be made by BACS transfer.

The LA will make the grant payments at the start of the Summer Holiday to enable families to purchase school uniform before the start of the new school year in September.

Application Procedure

If the child who will be entering Year 7 (or the LA's pupil referral unit) in September has already been awarded free school meals, the claimant only needs to complete the application form for School Uniform Grant (a copy will be sent to the claimant automatically in MAY)

If the child has not been awarded free school meals and the claimant is currently in receipt of one of the benefits outlined under "Eligibility for Grant" above, the claimant will need to complete an application form for Free School Meals as well as an application form for School Uniform Grant - both forms are available from the download section of this page.
