Safe Zones have been created in four Ceredigion towns to create an open, safe space.

Ceredigion County Council have created safe zones in Aberaeron, Aberystwyth, Cardigan and New Quay. The purpose of the Safe Zone is to create a space where people can walk around safely and confidently and are able to enjoy what our towns have to offer as visitors arrive.

As the summer holidays start, places begin to reopen and people begin to travel, the population of Ceredigion will double with visitors. We are aware that the booking rates for next week are high and our towns will become busy. This means that the danger to the public in Ceredigion increases.

These measures have been introduced as the next steps in Ceredigion’s efforts to keep the level of the coronavirus in the County at a low level. The Safe Zones create space to ensure that social distancing can be maintained in towns as more people visit. Ceredigion’s towns have narrow streets, therefore the need to close the road to traffic is to ensure that there is enough space for shoppers and visitors to enjoy the towns safely and are able to adhere to the required social distancing.

We are working with businesses to create outdoor space for people to enjoy. Along with measures businesses put in place, and residents and the guest community being asked to socially distance, we believe the safe zones provide the right space for people to visit and use our towns safely but differently. This is an opportunity to take advantage of the free parking at designated car parks and take time to enjoy and support local.

We thank all those that have been in touch with their views and following this feedback, some changes have been made where appropriate to improve arrangements prior to the influx of visitors from this weekend. Emergency Powers were used to create the Safe Zones to ensure that the necessary arrangements were in place for the re-opening of the tourism and hospitality sector this week. Information was shared with the public and businesses as soon as possible.

We thank the residents of Ceredigion for adhering to regulations and for keeping the number of cases of the coronavirus comparatively low.

Keep Ceredigion Safe.
