Ceredigion County Council has declared a global climate emergency in a Council meeting on 05 March 2020.
The Council has already committed to making Ceredigion a net zero carbon local authority by 2030, and to develop a clear plan for a pathway that will lead to a net zero carbon within 12 months.
Councillor Ellen ap Gwynn, Leader of the Council, proposed the motion. She said, “I’m very proud that Ceredigion County Council has declared a global climate emergency. We are dedicated to protecting the environment and doing what we can to reduce our carbon footprint. We have reduced our annual carbon emissions by 45% since 2007 and we have a number of projects that we are currently working towards to ensure that we reduce our carbon emissions even further.”
Councillor Mark Strong seconded the Motion and stated, “This statement complies with the objectives of the Welsh Governments’ Well-being of Future Generations Act. Going forward, the objective is to reduce our carbon use in our homes and to ensure the best use of local energy creation. This ensures that we reduce our carbon use significantly.”
This decision supports two of the Council’s Corporate Priorities of Investing in People’s Futures and Promoting Environmental and Community Resilience.
