On Thursday 27 June, year 5 and 6 pupils from Aberaeron-area primary schools took part in a sports festival at Ysgol Bro Sion Cwilt as part of the annual celebration of National School Sports Week 2019.

Around 117 children from years 5 and 6 from Bro Sion Cwilt, Cilcennin, Talgarreg and Aberaeron primary schools took part in the sports festival. The children took part in many activities including rugby, basketball, ball skills, cricket, dance and athletics.

Ben Lake MP visited Ysgol Bro Sion Cwilt during the sports festival to celebrate the importance of physical education to children’s development.

Aberaeron Cricket Club and The Jane Guy School of Dance gave taster sessions at the festival to encourage children to continue participating in these sports after the festival.

Young Ambassadors from primary and secondary schools in Ceredigion were present at the festival and enjoyed talking to Ben Lake MP about their achievements. In Ceredigion, every primary school has a Bronze Young Ambassadors, with every secondary school having Silver and Gold Young Ambassadors.

Catrin Miles, Cabinet member for Learning Services said, “It’s fantastic to see children from Aberaeron-area primary schools taking part in the 2019 sports festival. It is extremely important that children are given opportunities like this at a young age so that it encourages them to live a healthy lifestyle, as well as develop skills and improve their well-being.”

Alwyn Davies, Active Young People Manager said, “We are very proud of our sports projects for pre-school, nurseries, primary and secondary schools and also for the community. It was great to have Ben Lake MP visit Ysgol Bro Sion Cwilt during the sports festival so that he was able to witness some of our fantastic projects.”

Sports festivals are held termly for each cluster in locations such as Aberystwyth, Tregaron, Aberaeron, Lampeter, Cardigan and Llandysul. Autumn festivals are held for Foundation phase, spring term festivals for year 3 and 4 and summer term festivals held for year 5 and 6.
