Start Active, Stay Active!
It is important for us to be active throughout our lives and these guidelines can be helpful at whatever stage of your life you're at:
- Under 5's not yet walking
- Under 5's walking
- Children and Young People (5 - 18)
- Adults (19 - 64)
- Adults (65+)
It's also helpful to find out what children in your care should be doing too. Promoting active lifestyles has the potential to improve the physical and mental health of the whole population.
Physical activity is not all about competitive sport and going to the gym; the everyday activity of walking counts, which can be easily incorporated into our everyday life. The benefits of physical activity can be achieved through sessions of 10 minutes or more. Shorter sessions of physical activity offer an easier starting point for people who have been inactive for some time, and for those who have busy lives and find it hard to prioritise activity.
For those who have been inactive, it is important to allow the body time to adapt to being active again. Physical activity is a very low risk activity for most of the population. However, the risk that inactivity will lead to poor health is very high so we should all minimise the amount of time we spend being sedentary e.g. sitting for extended periods.
