School Admission

In Ceredigion a child may be admitted to a primary school at the beginning of the term following his/her 4th birthday. If there is a nursery class at the school, children may start at the beginning of the term following their 3rd birthday - usually on a part-time basis. However, legally children do not have to start school until they have attended their 5th birthday.

Children commence their secondary education in the September following their 11th birthday.

Please note: Parents have to apply for a place at whatever school(s) they would like to send their child. Details of when to apply are indicated on each grid. Application forms are available from the Download section on this page, or from the school or the Admission Officer at the Education Department.

General Admission Process

  1. Parent to contact school of choice.
  2. Admission application form to be completed (copies available from school or Local Education Authority website).
  3. Admission form to be returned to school of choice.
  4. Headteacher to complete the last page of the admission form and return form to the Local Education Authority.
  5. Local Education Authority to inform parents as to whether admission has been granted.
