In 1851 Census
W. J. Lewis writes in 'Gateway to Wales' :
'The Angel Inn, also in in St. Mary Street, was a large building which, in its time, had part of it used as a Nonconformist meeting house, barracks for the Militia, a grammar school while the Public Buildings were being built, and a theatre for strolling players. It was also a coaching inn.'
