Night Time Economy Project

Noise, littering, vandalism, fears about safety, drunkenness and antisocial behaviour associated with the night time economy are all problems that receive negative press. These problems also place an increasing strain on public services such as cleansing, environmental services, police, accident and emergency, fire and transport. Yet the night time economy is essential for the local economy and in maintaining the vibrancy and sustainability of Aberystwyth as a whole.

AberNight

In 2008, Ceredigion's Community Safety Partnership was successful in securing funding from the Welsh Assembly Government for a period of 12 months to tackle some of the problems linked to the night time economy in Aberystwyth. The project is a collaborative venture involving the County Council, Heddlu Dyfed Powys Police, Aberystwyth Town Council, the University of Wales, Aberystwyth local licensees, the youth forum etc working together to tackle the identified problems. Following the initial successes of the project during the first year, it was considered critical to continue with the excellent links and lines of communication which have been forged. With this in mind therefore, work relating to the Night Time Economy still continues .

Information gathered at a stakeholders event and from meetings with various organisations, contributed to the development of Aberystwyth's Night Time Economy Action plan. This was launched on the 15th October 2008 where representatives of the key partners, declared their commitment to the plan which aims to improve the management of the night time economy in the town.

The action plan has since been updated to reflect the important work undertaken to tackle the issues identified. A full copy of the completed action plan can be accessed here: pdficon.gif icon Aberystwyth NTE Action Plan [264kb]

The project's evaluation report has now been completed and can be accessed here: pdficon.gif icon NTE Evaluation Report Eng [412kb]

Coast and countryside abounds within Ceredigion and you really can't get much further west (without getting your feet wet!). Many members of our licensed trade are keen to prove that they really are the best in the west.

After the success of the Best Bar None scheme in Aberystwyth in 2009, Ceredigion County Council is pleased to be able to extend the scheme county wide. The 2010 award will also be open to leisure complexes/caravan parks (with a licensed area) as well as to pubs, bars and clubs in Ceredigion.

As part of the Night Time Economy Project, based in Aberystwyth, we have introduced the Best Bar None Award in Ceredigion. This has initially been aimed at licensed premises in Aberystwyth; however it is envisaged that it will be extended County Wide next year.

This is the second edition of this type of publication which has been specifically developed by the Health Improvement team within the Department of Environmental Services and Housing.

Volunteers from churches in Aberystwyth, led by Rachel and Josh Maynard from St Michael's Church intend to introduce the Night Light scheme as from November 2008, the first scheme of its kind in Ceredigion.

A SSHH campaign is being undertaken during the lead up to Christmas as part of Aberystwyth's Night Time Economy project.

There are huge difficulties in guessing someone's age correctly. When your livelihood may be affected guessing isn't an option - you need to be certain. So why not adopt the Challenge 21 policy for your premises?
