Visits to the Victorian school room, Tregaron
A Victorian school room has been re-created in one of the former class rooms in Yr Hen Ysgol, now the Red Kite Centre and Museum, Tregaron.
School groups are invited to visit the museum and use the room for a Victorian style lesson.
The school room contains:
- Old school desks of different types and age
- Church pews (Tregaron and other churches were sometimes used for lessons)
- These desks and seats are sufficient for about 25 children
- Teacher's desk
- Blackboard (chalk available)
- Abacus
- Modulator (with doh, ray, mi etc)
- Cupboards from the original school containing various objects such as ink bottles, old writing slates
- Modern writing slates and slate pencils for children to use
- Some pupils' costumes
- Mounted (stuffed) animals of the type formerly common in many schools
- Videos (and equipment) on local Natural History
- Bilingual information sheets
The rest of the museum contains:
- Displays on the Natural History of Tregaron Bog, peat cutting and transport
- Displays on the Red Kite
- Displays on Victorian costume including a Welsh woman's costume, wedding dress and girls dress (all from the Tregaron area)
- Time line for the Tregaron Area with photographs
- Information on the railway in the Tregaron area
- Models of various birds made by pupils of Tregaron Secondary School
- Art works of natural materials created by local junior school pupils
The Centre also has
- Parking for small coaches in the former playground (large coaches will have to park elsewhere in Tregaron)
- Toilets
- Shop (with 'pocket-money' items)
- Refreshments (tea, coffee, Welsh cakes, fruit juice)
- Access for wheelchair users travelling independently

April-September: Monday-Saturday, 10.30am-4.30pm
Open most weekends during winter from 12:00 pm - 4.00 pm

Length of a visit
This will depend on how long you want to use the Victorian class room. We would expect this to last at least half-an-hour. A similar time could be spent in the display area using the work sheets provided.
The total length of a visit could be between one and two hours.

The Kite Centre and Museum is run entirely by volunteers who are members of the Friends of Tregaron Kite Centre and Museum. It has been funded by Kite Country, The Countryside Commission for Wales, The Wales Tourist Board, CeredigionMuseum, Tregaron Community Council and others.
