What is a Shoreline Management Plan?

Shoreline Management Plans are the vehicle for the long-term sustainable management of our coast.

Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs) are being produced around the whole coastline of Wales and England to enable operating authorities to identify long term, sustainable policies for the coastal defence of our shoreline.

A "sustainable policy" is based on harmony between society's needs, the environment and the economy. 'Coastal Defence' means protecting the coastline from erosion by the sea and defending low lying land from flooding by the sea. SMPs are based on the study of coastal processes. These processes are the way nature drives the waves, tides and sediment; and the way the shoreline responds to these natural influences.
