Bow Street Public Transport Interchange

​It is proposed to build a new Rail and Bus Park & Ride with the following facilities:

  • 93 car parking spaces
  • 10 dedicated disabled car parking spaces
  • Bicycle storage
  • 150 metre-long train station platform
  • Waiting shelters
  • Ticket machines
  • Customer Information Screens
  • Help point
  • Step-free access between the car park and station platform
  • Safe pedestrian and cycle links into, from and within the site
  • New roundabout to replace the existing A487/ A4159 junction and provide safe access to/ from the site and address road safety concerns associated with the current arrangement
  • Sympathetic design with appropriate landscaping to reduce the visual impact of the scheme to local residents
  • Appropriate advance signing from the A487 in both directions, from the A44 at Lovesgrove and on the A4159


The business case for providing a new railway station in Bow Street dates back to 2010 and there are now even more reasons why a new Passenger transport Interchange to the north of Aberystwyth is required.  Aberystwyth town centre and the areas surrounding it are developing and traffic levels on roads to and from the area are set to rise bringing concerns about traffic congestion, limited town centre long stay parking provision, road safety and environmental impacts such as air quality and CO2 emissions.  The introduction of more rail passenger services on the Cambrian Line has led to a further significant increase in the demand for rail travel between Northern Ceredigion and the rest of the Wales and UK rail network.  The same is true for longer distance bus services such as the popular TrawsCymru T1, T2 and T5 services. This proposal also offers great potential to encourage more use of local bus services, walking and cycling (Active Travel) with more links planned to neighbouring communities.

How will it be funded?

The Welsh Government has provided funding to enable the scheme to be developed to the point where there is sufficient detail to allow it to be submitted for planning approval. A number of potential capital funding sources are currently being investigated that will enable scheme construction.   It is currently proposed that once complete, the County Council will operate and maintain the car park and Network Rail will lease the railway station to the train operating company. Ongoing revenue funding will be required to operate bus and train services and to maintain the parking and passenger waiting facilities at the site.

When will it happen?

There is still some work to be done to make this proposal a reality.  For example, the scheme will require the purchase of land on which to build the scheme, planning and other statutory consents and funding package will need to be put together.  County Council officers are already working with the Welsh Government, Rail Industry, bus operating companies, landowners and local residents to resolve these outstanding matters.  It is hoped to apply for funding in the Autumn and construction to begin from April 2017.
